JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has released a new video directly addressing and mocking rampant online rumors of his assassination. The footage, published amid a rapidly escalating regional war involving the United States, Israel, Iran, and Lebanon, shows the Israeli leader casually drinking coffee and laughing off the conspiracy theories.

While the prime minister’s tone in the video was notably lighthearted, his message was accompanied by a stark reminder of the deadly conflict engulfing the Middle East. Netanyahu confirmed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are currently executing "very strong operations" across both Iran and Lebanon, underscoring the severity of a military crisis that has disrupted global markets and claimed thousands of lives since late February.

The Viral Video: Defying 'AI' Conspiracy Theories

The clarification from the prime minister’s office came after days of intense speculation across social media platforms. Following a televised press conference earlier in the week, unverified reports began circulating that Netanyahu had been killed in an Iranian retaliatory bombing.

The rumors were further fueled by online conspiracy theorists who scrutinized the press conference footage. Commentators claimed to have spotted a "classic AI finger glitch," alleging that the prime minister appeared to have six fingers on one hand at the 0:35 mark of the broadcast. This led to widespread assertions that the Israeli government was using artificial intelligence to mask the leader’s death.

In a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram on Sunday, Netanyahu directly tackled these claims. Filmed at a cafe on the outskirts of Jerusalem, the prime minister appeared relaxed in a suit, chatting with an aide.

"I'm dying for coffee, you know what I mean?" Netanyahu joked in the video, utilizing a Hebrew slang pun on the word "dead" that translates to being intensely passionate or "crazy about" something. "I'm crazy about my people. How they are behaving is fantastic."

To put the AI rumors to rest, Netanyahu held his hands up to the camera. "Do you want to count my fingers? You can see them here… and here. See? Very nice."

While an AI chatbot later fact-checked the original "six-finger" claims—explaining that the perceived anomaly was merely an optical illusion caused by shadows and the natural contours of the palm—the sheer velocity of the rumors highlights the dense fog of war currently blanketing the region.

"Strong Operations" in Iran and Lebanon

Despite the relaxed setting of the video, Netanyahu used the platform to issue a stern update on the military situation. He praised the resilience of the Israeli public and thanked his supporters, noting that their backing empowers the government and the IDF.

"We're doing things I can't share right now, but there are very strong operations in Iran and Lebanon today as well," the prime minister stated. He advised citizens to enjoy the fresh air but to remain close to protected spaces, adhering strictly to Home Front Command safety orders.

The situation in Lebanon has deteriorated rapidly since early March. Following rocket attacks by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, Israel launched expansive retaliatory strikes aimed at dismantling the group's infrastructure. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, the death toll from Israeli attacks has reached 850 people—including over 100 children and 31 health workers—since March 2. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese civilians have been internally displaced as the IDF issues sweeping evacuation orders for neighborhoods in southern Beirut and across southern Lebanon.

Iran's IRGC Responds with Fresh Threats

The prime minister’s video did little to diffuse the hostility emanating from Tehran. Shortly after the footage was verified and circulated, Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a fierce public statement.

Publishing their remarks on the state-linked Sepah News website, the IRGC labeled the Israeli leader a "child-killing criminal," a reference to the mounting civilian casualties in the ongoing military campaigns.

"If this child-killing criminal is alive, we will continue to pursue and kill him with full force," the Guard stated. The aggressive rhetoric points to a deeply entrenched conflict with no immediate diplomatic off-ramp in sight.

The Origins of the February 2026 Escalation

The current crisis represents one of the most significant geopolitical flashpoints of the 21st century. The war officially erupted on February 28, 2026, when the United States—under the administration of President Donald Trump—and Israel launched unprecedented joint strikes against Iranian nuclear and military facilities.

The stated objectives of the US-Israeli coalition involve severely degrading Iran's military capabilities and leadership. The opening salvos of the conflict resulted in the death of Iran's former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, fundamentally shaking the Islamic Republic's political foundation.

In response, Iran and its regional proxies have launched waves of retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, US military assets in Iraq, and neighboring Gulf states that host Western military bases. The tit-for-tat strikes have resulted in a staggering human cost. Reports indicate that over 1,300 people have been killed in Iran, while the wider Gulf region remains on high alert amid frequent air raid sirens and drone interceptions.

Economic and Global Implications: The Outlook

As the war enters its third week, the global implications are becoming increasingly severe. The conflict has effectively disrupted shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for the world's energy supply. Consequently, global oil prices have soared, prompting the International Energy Agency (IEA) to prepare the release of hundreds of millions of barrels in emergency reserves to stabilize the market.

For now, the outlook remains highly volatile. US and Israeli leadership have signaled their intent to continue dismantling Iranian and Hezbollah military infrastructure, while Iran's new leadership council insists that the resistance will not waver. With both sides heavily dug into their military strategies, the international community is bracing for a prolonged and economically damaging regional war.
