DATELINE: WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move that has sent shockwaves through North American markets, President Donald Trump has issued a high-stakes ultimatum to Canada. In a series of statements this weekend, the President threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Ottawa finalizes its proposed trade agreement with Beijing.
The threat marks a significant escalation in the "America First" trade agenda, effectively forcing Canada to choose between its integrated North American supply chains and its recent pivot toward the world’s second-largest economy.
The "Drop-Off Port" Warning
Trump’s latest broadside specifically targets Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whom he referred to as "Governor Carney" in a social media post. Trump accused the Canadian government of attempting to turn the nation into a "drop-off port" for Chinese goods, specifically electric vehicles (EVs) and manufacturing components, to bypass existing U.S. sanctions.
If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.," the President wrote. He warned that allowing Chinese influence to grow in the north would "devour" Canada’s social fabric and destroy its domestic businesses.
