US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6, 2026, marking their first official visit to the Ukrainian capital since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion. Their arrival follows a pivotal three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, representing a renewed push by the Trump administration to revive stalled peace negotiations.

The diplomatic mission takes place against the backdrop of an intensifying air war and a grueling stalemate along the 1,250-kilometre front line. While the meetings yielded no immediate breakthroughs, they underscore a crucial juncture in the conflict as both sides face the prospect of another harsh winter of fighting.

Moscow Talks: "Frank and Constructive"

The talks in Moscow on Saturday, which lasted over three hours, were attended by key Russian figures, including Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov and Putin's special envoy for economic cooperation with the US, Kirill Dmitriev. The Kremlin characterised the discussions in positive terms, with Ushakov describing them as "substantive, constructive, exceptionally candid, and conducted in a spirit of trust".

According to Ushakov, Witkoff and Kushner "formulated a number of ideas regarding possible avenues for a settlement". However, the specific details of the American proposal remain undisclosed. US President Donald Trump had previously stated that his envoys were "bringing with them a proposal to end the war," but neither the White House nor the Kremlin has publicly detailed the terms.

During the meeting, Putin acknowledged the complexity of the task, stating that the situation they have to resolve is "not a simple one". Ushakov noted that Putin presented Moscow's assessment of the war, emphasising Russia's recent battlefield gains and expressing confidence in achieving its stated objectives. Currently, Russia controls a significant portion of eastern Ukraine, a reality that heavily influences any potential negotiations.

The dialogue also extended beyond the immediate conflict. Ushakov revealed that "economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects for Russia and America were discussed in considerable detail".

A Fragile Ceasefire and the Path to Kyiv

In a significant, albeit limited, concession to facilitate the diplomatic mission, both sides agreed to a temporary, localized halt in airstrikes. Putin ordered the Russian military to pause strikes on Kyiv for three days, starting at midnight on Saturday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reciprocated, stating on social media that he had spoken with the US envoys upon their arrival in Moscow. He affirmed Kyiv's commitment to ensuring the visit is "as constructive and substantive as possible" and pledged that Ukraine would refrain from strikes on Moscow for the duration of the talks, expecting Russia to do the same regarding Kyiv.

Despite this agreement to pause strikes on the capitals, officials reported that the two sides still exchanged fire in other regions overnight into Sunday. The Ukrainian air force claimed to have intercepted 82 of 108 drones launched by Russia overnight, highlighting the precarious nature of the temporary truce.

The View from Kyiv

For Zelenskyy and his administration, the visit by Witkoff and Kushner is seen as vital for the envoys to witness the conflict's toll firsthand. Expectations in Kyiv, however, remain tempered. The Zelenskyy administration has consistently maintained that Russian demands regarding Ukrainian territory are unacceptable, while Putin has signalled that his territorial demands remain unchanged.

The core sticking points in any potential settlement remain deeply entrenched. These include the status of occupied territories, particularly the Donbas region; robust security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future aggression; and the broader implications for European security and NATO's role.

As Witkoff and Kushner engage with Ukrainian officials on Sunday, they are expected to convey the observations and assessments gathered from their meeting with Putin. A White House representative has described the Moscow talks as "substantive" and indicated that next steps will be announced in the coming weeks.

Outlook

The arrival of the US envoys in Kyiv marks a critical phase in the renewed diplomatic effort. However, the lack of a breakthrough in Moscow and the vast differences between the two sides highlight the immense challenges ahead. With the conflict entering a critical phase before winter and the Iran war demanding significant US attention, the pressure is mounting for a sustainable resolution. Whether this diplomatic push can bridge the gap between Moscow's demands and Kyiv's imperatives remains to be seen.
